The truth about the role of exercise in weight-loss. 
The Myth that's most harmful to weight-loss is that if you exercise enough you can burn off all the calories that you consume with food. From which follows that if you move around a lot, you can allow yourself to eat a lot too. This is simply not true. There is a number of ways that the body can (and inevitably will) adjust for exercise no matter how intense the excercise is, so that the net weigh-loss will be zero (example: reduce resting body temperature, reduce resting heart rate and stroke volume).They actually measured energy expenditure of a person living a primitive tribal life and moving a lot and the energy expenditure of a typical office worker and found that the net result was... the same! (Besides, remember how much time you had to spend on treadmill to burn just 200Kcal!(the caloric value of a small chocolate bar). Exercise is great for your health, both physical and mental, but it has negligible effect on weight loss. Moreover, strenuous exercise increases your appetite a lot, so it is actually not advisable for people trying to lose weight. That also explains why the rate of obesity is actually higher among people doing physical labour as opposed to sedentary office workers. So forget about waisting your time and money at the gym, instead, take nice, short brisk walks that will be both pleasant and healthful, and focus the rest of your energy on your diet!
